Watch ITV HD On Your Sky HD Box
ITV HD is only available via FreeSat. Sky HD subscribers can’t receive it. At least, that’s the official line. So you might think you need to buy yet another set-top box or a TV with FreeSat built-in — but that’s not the case.
ITV’s HD Q&A Help page states: ITV HD is only available through freesat, so you’ll need a satellite dish and either a TV with freesat HD built in (available soon), or a freesat HD digital box connected to an HD Ready TV. Many Sky HD subscribers are annoyed that they cannot watch ITV’s HD programming because it’s excluded from Sky HD’s channel listings — not that there’s much on ITV in HD at present, but in many ways that makes its absence from the Sky HD platform all the more frustrating for those who’ve already invested money in an HD TV and a Sky HD box: every bit of HD programming, especially from the established terrestrial channels, is precious precisely because there’s so little of it around.
UPDATE 02 APRIL 2010 — ITV HD is now officially available on the Sky HD EPG on channel 178. Thanks to everyone who’s posted comments on this item during the last 12 months. Further comments are now disabled.
Well, it is possible to watch ITV HD via Sky HD (though functionality is reduced) — you just need to know how to tell your box how to receive it.
To receive the ITV HD channel through the SKY HD box it must be added as an Other Channel via the updated version of the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), if it’s been automatically downloaded and installed by Sky on your HD box (being upgraded throughout March – May. Note: I’m told you cannot add ITV HD to the older version of the EPG. You must wait for the automatic upgrade. You’ll know when you’ve been upgraded because the look of the new EPG is completely different from the old one.)
However, because the ITV HD channel doesn’t appear in the main list of channels in the EPG, there is no live pause and it can’t be recorded — and currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen saying “This programme is unavailable on ITV1 HD” (note: on 7th December 2009, it was noticed that this new caption had replaced the previous one saying the service is “currently unavailable”). Still, it’s useful to have it for things like football games, etc.
To add ITV HD, go to the TV Guide, find Options in the top menu, then drop down and scroll along to Add Channels.
Change the Frequency details to 11.427 and press Select. (Nothing happens.) Then change Polarisation to H. Leave the Symbol Rate as 27.5 and FEC as 2/3. Then press the yellow button for Find Channels.
On the next page, there should be several services listed. Scroll down to Channel 10510 and press Store Channel. A tick will appear next to Channel 10510. This is the channel name for ITV HD, and it’s now stored in the box.
To view the channel, go to the TV Guide, find Options in the top menu, then drop down and scroll along to Other Channels. Drop the cursor into the apparently empty listing box — and Channel 10510 will then appear. Select the channel.
A bit complicated, but it’s better than not having access to it at all!
Hope this works! Let me know how you get on.
UPDATE: 11 December 2009: a number of people have recently left comments about seeing the message ‘no satellite signal being received’ after adding the channel. It seems to be affecting mainly Amstrad boxes. If you see this message, the cure seems to be to remove the channel (and any others that may have appeared in the ‘Other Channels’ list), then try adding ITV HD (10510) again using the above process. If that doesn’t work: remove it again and wait until ITV HD is actually broadcasting an HD programme (currently there are only a few, at peak time, each week — check a listings magazine such as Radio Times for details), then try adding it. Thanks to Dan C and Andy (who both posted on 10th December 2009) and others who’ve discovered this ‘fix’ by trial and error.
Tony B (10th December 2009) has noticed that Emmerdale — broadcast nightly at 7pm, usually for 30 minutes — is also appearing now on the ITV HD channel, though it doesn’t yet seem to be listed as such anywhere! Having watched a few minutes of it myself the other night, I’m not convinced it’s actually made in HD — it looks ‘cleaner’ than it does on ‘standard’ ITV1, but it doesn’t exhibit the resolution I’d expect from an HD programme.

Hi Bobby, thanks for your comment — yes, it’s possible to watch the ITV HD channel whilst recording another channel — I’ve just tried it. The ITV HD channel occupies one LNB on the satellite dish while the channel being recorded occupies the other.
Here’s an interesting page explaining what an LNB (Low Noise Block) is and how it works: Satellite LNB: What It Is and How Does It Work

Headbolt — Hmm, looks like you’re missing a few other channels — labelled “FreesatHome”, “FreesatCommonC”, “FreesatSSU” and “FreesatOAD” (and a “Teletext” channel) — which, although they don’t seem to have anything on them, are obviously something to do with the batch of FreeSat channels available to a “normal” Freesat viewer, of which 10510 is also one. If they’re all missing, along with 10510, it sounds like your dish/box isn’t receiving any of the FreeSat channels for some reason. The other channels you see are, I would imagine, not part of the FreeSat package as, apart from “Brit Shorts”, they are (not very good) audio-only services, carrying music-based channels.
That’s my guess at what’s going on.

I’ve Had Sky HD since the first day it launched (currently on 3rd Skybox but that’s another story) and cursed ITV’s lack of football in HD which looks rubbish on a large plasma (and I am not buying Free Sat either).

Hi Dean — I don’t know the answer for sure, as I’ve not tried it on my box, but I suspect the answer is “no” because the channel is not included in the ‘official’ channels listed in the EPG.
Craig — This is correct. ITV HD only transmits programmes that are in the HD format. It does not transmit all of ITV’s output all of the time. That’s why I wrote: “currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen.” Check a listings magazine (such as Radio Times) and look to see which ITV programmes are being simulcast in HD. If it has, and scrolling down to Frequency and then trying to enter the number sequence one, one, four, two, seven (you just ignore the decimal point) using the remote keypad has no effect, then I’m stumped. marts2smooth — no, as far as I know, there is no risk to your other saved chanels or the normal operation of your box. Adding other channels is a legitimate process for the Sky+ HD box — we’re not doing anything illegal or anything that invalidates our Sky subscriptions, it’s just a process that’s not been given much official publicity. Once you’ve changed the frequency and the polarisation and added the appropriate channel, you’ll see that the settings in the “Add Channels” section have reverted to their default values the next time you go to it.
Hey Paul, good to hear from you. Yes, I’ve seen that caption — please see above in the main item (and to Craig in the above comments): “currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen.” ITV doesn’t produce much output in HD at present, so their HD channel only goes “live” when there is actually something in HD to transmit!

Thanks for your easy set up instructions, works a treat and now have the programme stored. The only query is I’m getting a screen saying ‘this service is currently unavailable’?

Somerset Bob says:

Hi Jackie — No, you’ve done nothing wrong — as I said in my item (and also in reply to the comments from Craig and Paul raising the same query): “currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen.”
The only listings magazine I use is Radio Times, so I don’t know about other mags, but RT indicates which ITV programmes are scheduled to be simulcast in HD on the ITV HD channel by stating, in small print under the programme details, “Simulcast in HD for Freesat HD viewers only, via the red button”. Obviously, in our case we go to channel 10510 in our Other Channels list.
ITV HD programmes are currently few and far between — looking back over this week, for example, there was a two-hour long late film on Monday night (The 40 Year Old Virgin), two and a half hours of Champions League football on Tuesday night and part one of the drama series Boy Meets Girl on Friday night which was one hour long, making a grand total of five and a half hours of HD on ITV for the entire week. Not exactly a big reward for those who’ve lashed out money on a Freesat box because they’ve been led to believe that “ITV HD is only available through freesat” (ITV’s statement, not mine).
Spread the word, folks!

I don’t think you can force the EPG upgrade. About a month ago my Thompson SKY HD box died, it had upgraded itself to the new EPG before it packed up. I replaced it with a brand new PACE HD box which did not have the new EPG out of the box. I forced a software upgrade, it had no effect, the box still had the old EPG. As of 22nd MAY my Pace box has downloaded the new EPG during the night. I think Sky is rolling out the new EPG based upon your manufacturer. My system details are : Model PACE 2.2.222, Version 9F3003, operating system 1.32B12, EPG software sky+8.4.0.MultiPlatform.v.3.0.0
I received an email from Sky the day before the update informing me that my system was about to get the new EPG.
Hope the info helps.

Hi Darren — thanks for that useful information.
I’m sure it must be very frustrating for those that still haven’t received the EPG upgrade, but it does seem that Sky have had a planned schedule in place for some time, and they’re sticking to it. I recall reading somewhere else that they were doing it based on box manufacturers. For the record, mine’s a Thomson, it was upgraded back in late March or early April (I’ve forgotten exactly when) — and I received a letter and brochure about it in the post a couple of days prior to it being done overnight.

Recieved the new EPG this morning (Pace HD box). First thing I did was tried for ITV — all works fine, except when selected I get the message “no signal received”. Is this normal? The channel is stored in my Other Channel section, but can’t pick it up, or it’s not broadcasting.

Hi Mark — you might have a problem. As far as I know, the ITV HD channel is online 24/7, but when it is NOT actually broadcasting any programmes, the ITV HD logo is displayed with a caption saying “This service is currently unavailable”. (I’ve just checked on my Thomson box, and this is what is currently being displayed.)
If you’re seeing a message saying “No signal received” it sounds like your dish, or the box, is not receiving the signal properly.

Hi Rodder, Ron and MarkB — as the three of you, along with Mark Seager, are all experiencing the same problem, this suggests to me that it’s not your fault.
Two possible answers come to mind:
1) Maybe it’s the box type/model — I see that two out of the four of you are on Pace boxes (the other two didn’t mention what boxes you have). Mine is a Thomson. Perhaps this makes a difference.
2) Maybe Sky have now plugged the ‘hole’ in the EPG software that allows the signal through, preventing those that have been more recently upgraded from processing the ITV HD channel signal. Those of us who have been able to receive the signal up till now might soon find ourselves being blocked from doing so when our new EPGs are updated again at some point in the future.
I’m afraid I have no workarounds to suggest, but hopefully other readers might have. Watch this space!
UPDATE: On the Facebook group (from where I got the original instructions for adding the ITV HD channel), two interesting postings:
On 12 March, a member wrote a post asking if anyone else had heard about certain boxes, manufactured by Pace, being recalled. (Their box had, apparently, been recalled. They were given three months free HD subscription for their troubles.) On the same day, they replied to their own post with: “I found this on a Google search … The issue relates to the way in which some of the boxes in the batch were assembled. In particular, it involves the internal cabling and the quality of the connections between components. This means that the build quality of a box that was part of this batch may not meet Sky’s standards.”
On 18 May, a different member wrote on the group’s Wall: “At a glance yes the new EPG is good but it is full of bugs!!! Keep getting the “No Signal” even though all signal and quality bars are full. The time on the TV Guide is about 10mins behind, sound keeps going plus the usual fail recordings!!!!!”
I have to say I’ve not experienced anything like those bugs on my Thomson box with the new EPG — but the “no signal” bug sounds familiar … !
MarkB says:

My first Pace box crashed in four hours — kept going to a blank green screen, couldn’t use Sky plus, remote failed to control box, box turned off. Eventually, even the remote packed up.
Called Sky, had the usual shpeel, turn off box, disconnect cables, bla bla bla, every time I called them over a four day period. Unfortunately this hapened on a bank holiday weekend just gone, even the engineer who brought and set up replacement was amazed that even the remote control had totally failed (although he did try new batteries when I was out of the room), but this new Pace box works OK up to now — but have noticed fluctuations in the signal strength/quality in new EPG.
My father has a Samsung box and when he called Sky about not having the updated EPG (lives five minutes walk from me) was told that Sky were doing it by make, i.e. Thomson first it would seem, then Pace, and so on. But am disappointed that I’m not able to get the ITV HD channel and there’s no way I’m gonna pay 130 bucks for a box to watch one channel and one or two progs a week lol …
On your last comment you said maybe they fixed the EPG loophole that allows Sky boxes to pick up ITV HD, but why do that?? Surely ITV couldn’t force them to block a technically free to air service.
Somerset Bob says:

Hi MarkB — I suspect your experience with a dodgy box is by no means unique, and I’m sorry it’s been such a nightmare for you.
What I said about Sky possibly blocking reception of ITV HD on Sky HD boxes was merely supposition on my part. I have no idea whether they can actually achieve that technically. But if they can, the answer to “why do that” seems obvious to me: because ITV would like to tempt viewers into buying a FreeSat box or TV because they, along with the BBC, have invested money in setting up FreeSat as an alternative to Sky. They might also like to make sure their statement that “ITV HD is only available through freesat” is factually true, which it patently isn’t all the while it can be added as an Other Channel on Sky HD boxes. I daresay they’re not very happy with the likes of me telling people how to do it!

Yes I can confirm that in my case, after rebooting the box then removing the added channels, then adding them, doesn’t work [my bad]. The correct way (as stated by Mark Seager) is to FIRST remove the added channels, THEN reboot your box i.e. turn off, remove all connections etc., wait a moment then reconnect the cables etc, power up your box, go through the procedure to add ITV HD, and — voila — this time it worked for me any ways. So thanks Mark Seager, must now wait for the elusive ITV HD content to see what all the fuss is about!

Also, any thoughts on proposed ITV monthly charge and possible disappearance of ITV channels from Freeview?

Well it’s not new, but hey, it is simple to achieve …
If you go to http://www.satcodx2.com/0282/eng/
this gives you the channel listing for Astra (Sky Satellite). Just look for the frequencies associated with the channel group you want (e.g. Freesat) and then add them as mentioned above. They don’t appear in the Sky EPG of course, but as mentioned above you access them in the Other Channel listing section.
You can do this with any Sky box of course, but you only get the HD channels if you have an HD IRD. There are a few channels, so add them and see …

Hi DaveM — thanks for your comment, and I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed about the lack of new EPG on your new setup. How frustrating!
It seems Sky have a pre-defined schedule of upgrades. I can only assume you’re on their list and that it WILL come through eventually.
Fudskie — wow, that looks like a very comprehensive listing! I’ll leave it for others to play with, as I’m quite happy with my setup — but thanks for taking the trouble to post information about it here.

Hello,
Sometimes it is worth doing a forced upgrade to get the new EPG, the Sky installer is meant to do it on install, but they don’t always do it as it takes time, etc.
To do a forced software upgrade, do the following:
1) put your HD box in standby mode
2) hold your finger on the Back Up Button on the top of the Set top Box NOT ON THE REMOTE
3) KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE BACK UP BUTTON (DO NOT LET GO) then pull the power lead out and put it back in after 10 seconds.
4) KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE BACK UP BUTTON and wait for all the lights on the front panel to light up. At this point you can let go of the Back Up Button. BUT not before the panel lights up on the front.
You then get a message on screen saying Upgrading Software – DO NOT power off the box !! It will switch itself back in to standy when it has finished.
It may take up to two minutes to be able to switch the standby back on to ON status as it reloads itself and then boots back up.
This will ensure that you have the latest software and I have found has also made the HD boxes we install for Sky Business have the latest EPG. No I do not work for Sky either before you ask, commercial engineering only.
This above is a normal upgrade procedure but I will not be held responsible for any issues of course – this is to be done at your own risk and you may lose any recorded programs on the hard drive … Usual Disclaimer.

Yes Mark (Cunliffe), my parents have a Samsung box and have yet to be up graded to new EPG, so it would appear that Samsung boxes can’t be forced to upgrade to new EPG
That aside, my signal strength/quality has gone real bad since I got new EPG/firmware on my Pace box, it’s all over the place

I had Sky+HD installed literally a couple of weeks ago, and would have thought the new EPG would be already installed on the box (which is an Amstrad receiver). I’m getting worried now as Champions League football will be soon upon us, and I rather fancied watching it in HD via ITV HD, which I believe you can only get if you have the new EPG. Does anybody know if it will be available by Autumn time?
Fred Bloggs says:

There is no such thing as a forced update.
All that going through the process described above does is tell the box to download and install the last version that was assigned for use by your particular box.
If Sky haven’t allocated the new EPG, firmware etc you will simply re-receive the one you already have that was probably working as it should. If the box gets screwed then the warranty of the box may be voided as Sky know when a box is due an upgrade, whether it has attempted an upgrade and of course if a Sky engineer has been to try the procedure.
The only time that an ‘upgrade’ occurs is if you happened to try the described process when your machine has failed a previous attempt at an upgrade but that is very rare as the box will normally re-try over and over again all by itself anyway.
BTW – you can normally tell when you box has received program instructions as it will have rebooted and gone back to the Sky demo channel so when you next switch on afterwards it should be obvious that something has changed.

Will I need to subscribe to Sky TV or the HD Pack to watch all the HD channels?
Three HD channels – BBC HD, Channel 4 HD and Luxe TV HD – are available to watch without any subscriptions. To watch these HD channels you will need a Sky+HD box and an HD ready TV (Channel 4 HD requires a valid viewing card).
How about freesat, or wait till freeview freely available, which apparently will be freeview HD by the time of general availability
Or you could, if you’re confident, oick up a Sky HD box on eBay for about £80 and just watch the free to air HD channels, inc ITV HD, with the new HD EPG

after 3 HD+ boxes failing I told Sky to s** off and they let me cancel after 3 months…yay! Got a lot of my money back.
No one has bothered to collect my Sky HD+ box despite me calling and emailing every week, they then said keep it and do as I wish! Haha, so now I can still watch many Sky channels includng a few HD for free,
as the card no longer works, I cannot watch my recorded programs as you don’t get Sky HD+ access once your sub is stopped.
I uploaded the ITV HD just now ok, it works. So thanks for that! Worked fine (just no programmes yet this week on the ITV HD schedule).
Do you know of any way I can still watch my old recorded Sky HD+ programmes?
Cheers…

Please, complain to Sky about their restrictive EPG policy. It’s not really ITV’s fault that Sky is pay-to-play.

The reason I ask is that I read somewhere that all of the main HD channels must be made available to watch on all different platforms. The only reason it is not on the EPG now is because they get round it by offering it as an interactive “Red Button” service. Not sure if any of this is true but hopefully ITV HD will appear on SKY EPG soon.

Hi Guys, First a Big thanks for Bob for allowing us ITV HD on sky hd
My problem is in the new EPG, in that the old EPG allowed you to alter the volume on the box so when I had the old EPG my Pioneer amp would be on about -30db and the sound was good. Now with the new EPG I have to have my amp on about -20 to get the same sound level. When I use another source such as DVD etc, that’s still good or play music. I am awaiting an answer from Sky, but looking at other forums they say that this is a fault with the new EPG??
Any ideas

I think that there is a way to force the EPG download! On the front of your box press backup and hold it in! Then disconnect from mains and reconnect! Wait 20 secs while still holding backup (do not let go of back up) — this will then download a software update! And no it won’t delete anything off your planner as it’s just updating the software. Hope this helps

Sorry for the delay in publishing your comment and replying!
As far as I know, if you follow the instructions as I’ve outlined in my original post above, there is no chance of mucking up your other programme settings. I’ve gone through the process myself and everything was fine. Other people have done it too, with no problem.
There are other comments that talk about forcing the EPG upgrade if your box hasn’t already upgraded itself — I cannot vouch for these personally, as I have not had to carry them out, so you should be a little more cautious if you’re going to try following them.

marts2smooth — As far as I know, ITVHD can’t be added to your favourites because it’s not listed amongst the ‘normal’ channels in the EPG. So the only way to view it is to select it via the “other channels” list.
Unless, of course, someone else knows differently …?

For what it’s worth, here are my comments on downloading the ‘new EPG’.
Firstly, when you boot your Sky box by holding the back-up button etc., you download the EPG — takes about 10 mins, but this new EPG will not work until switched on by Sky.
If your box make has been switched on by Sky you should get the new EPG within hours, or perhaps a couple of days. However if your make of box has not yet been triggered by Sky, you will have to wait until they do switch you on. Sky will send you an email two days before they switch you on. The new EPG does not lower your signal strength — it’s digital, so you get the signal or you don’t. The more important measurement is Signal Quality: this needs to be high because it includes other parameters needed for consistent reception and picture quality.
Hope this helps someone.

marB — I don’t know the answer to your question, but I would imagine that if ITV do pump everything out to their HD channel, so that the gaps between proper HD-formatted programmes are filled with programmes not actually filmed/made in HD, then that would probably justify adding it to the EPG. But who knows how the minds of the ITV executives work?

Mind you, I do seem to recall having occasional problems similar to yours in the past (not specifically related to ITV HD), where one of the two receivers seems to stop working properly.
Have you tried going into standby, unplugging the box from the mains, waiting a couple of minutes, plugging it back in again, waiting another few minutes, then switching it back on? That often clears problems.

Hi Andy — looking back through the comments here, two people say they noticed the same thing (MarkB & Mark Seager on June 3rd).
There’s been no further comment about it so far, but at least you’re not alone in thinking you’re experiencing a degradation in signal strength and picture quality.
I’m not sure the two are necessarily linked: as I understand it, with digital transmissions, picture quality doesn’t depend on signal strength: either there IS a picture, or there isn’t. When signal strength drops below the point where a reliable signal can be received and decoded, the picture will suddenly pixillate, freeze, or disappear altogether. Signal strength is dependent on a lot of different factors: in my case, for example, heavy cloud cover and/or heavy rain can disrupt the fragile signal I receive and the picture and sound can break up until the rain passes! Perhaps a prolonged bout of heavy cloud, such as we’ve been experiencing recently, has degraded people’s signal strength?
The actual picture quality is, I think, more to do with the way the box handles the decoding of the received signal: I suppose it’s possible that the new EPG upgrade also changed the algorithm (software) that works to decode (decompress) the information in the signal and then display the picture. But this IS only supposition on my part — I don’t know for sure whether this is so.
It might also depend on whether there have been changes in the way the signal is compressed before being sent out — I’ve read elsewhere that some people are upset with the BBC for lowering the picture quality of BBC HD by deciding to “squash” (compress) the signal into a narrower bandwidth, but I have to say I’ve not really noticed it on my BBC HD pictures. My BBC standard definition pictures are OK; ITV’s are, generally, inferior.
If anyone’s got any proper technical knowledge to share on this aspect of signal and picture degradation, feel free to contribute a comment or three!
PS Mine’s a Thompson box.

Hi Charlie — most unusual. You’re the only person to have reported this problem here so far!
The settings on the Add Channels page should have defaulted back to the original figures anyway, but here they are for you:
Frequency (gHz): 11.778
Polarisation: V
Symbol Rate: 27.5
FEC: 2/3

I had SkyHD installed Friday 4th December with old EPG but woke up this morning (7th December) with new EPG.
I have added ITVHD using the above instructions, I am now waiting for ITVHD to broadcast something in HD so I can check it out!

Hi Jamie — that caption is correct. I’ve just checked, and they’ve changed the wording of the display that they put up when there are no HD programmes being transmitted. It used to say that the service “is unavailable” — I’ve amended the main story above to reflect this change. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
You must be patient: check the ITV1 programme listings in something like Radio Times and look in the small print at the bottom of each programme to see which ITV1 programmes are also being shown on ITV HD. If you select the ITV HD channel then, you’ll see the programme in HD.
Ace, Harvey, Lee — thanks for keeping us all up to speed with your own experiences. Glad it’s OK for you!

Hi,
I have Amstrad Sky HD Box with the new EPG Nov 30th 09, I have the channel that ITV1 HD sits on, and it’s blocked saying “no sat signal”, trust me I have no signal problems at all.
No problems with the BOX, it’s been switched off at the socket rebooted again and again. I would warn that I’m sure Sky will be doing the same when an OS update will happen to older boxes.
Somerset Bob says:
December 8th, 2009
10:11 pm
Stu — you’re not the first to report this “no signal” problem, but others have found that if they tune to the ITV HD channel when they’re actually broadcasting an HD programme, it then works. Check back through the above comments, around November 23rd.

My Amstrad box has been upgraded at last with the new EPG and I’ve tried on several occasions both when ITV1 HD is broadcasting and when it’s not. I’ve re-booted many times and I still get the no satellite signal is being received message. I must suspect that this is being blocked by Sky. What are others experiencing?
Mark says:

Hi, after reading the reviews and like so many others having the “No Satelite Signal” – just checked the listing Ah – footballs on ITV HD – it actually works, here’s what I did, I deleted the 10510 channel from the “Other Channels” tab, went into “Add Channels” changed the setting’s and did the scan found 10510 and added it – hey presto got Arsenal in HD….great
Somerset Bob says:
December 9th, 2009
9:15 pm
Tony B and Stu — I don’t think it’s the case that Sky is blocking it, as many who get it no problem are still getting it, while others who first experience the ‘no satellite’ problem seem to have success at a later stage — maybe doing it Mark’s way (see above comment) is what you should try (assuming you haven’t already): remove 10510, and go through the add channel process again while there’s a programme actually being transmitted on ITV HD. I’ve no idea why this should make a difference, but … it seems to work in some cases!

Met — thanks for your comment. It seems from the comments coming in that the Amstrad boxes in particular are the ones exhibiting the ‘no satellite signal’ problem and need to be tuned into IYV HD while the channel is actually broadcasting a programme. Interesting! I’ve added an update to the main item above to draw readers’ attention to the ‘Amstrad problem’ and its possible resolution.

To all you guys with Amstrad boxes: when you first try and connect to ITV HD you will get a caption saying NO SATELLITE SIGNAL. All you have to do is remove or delete 10510 channel and go through the same steps and re-tune 10510 and you will then receive ITV HD.
Dan C says:

Just in case this helps anyone else, I have an Amstrad box and had the same problem as others had experienced with the “No Satellite Signal is being received” message appearing, despite having followed the instructions to the letter.
I had tried rebooting and also re-performing the procedure whilst ITV was broadcasting a HD program, both to no avail.
I have got it working tonight by going into “Other Channels” and removing ALL of the other channels that were in this, I’m not too sure how these other channels got in here in the first place, but there were some other entries in there like “WELL CLASS” so I removed all of these using the yellow button.
I then re-performed the scan as before, and this time when I added 10510 I was able to see the ITV HD banner, so this was not even when a HD program was being broadcast.
Hope this may help others who might be experiencing the same.

Whoa!
Ashley, Pete, John, Steve, Nick (and anyone else who had problems last night) — I tuned in to watch the footy and after about ten minutes had the same freeze-frame problem as you. Went to ‘normal’ ITV1 and the pic was OK. Went back to 10510 several times over the next 20 minutes or so, but got only a blue screen. I decided it had to be an ITV transmission fault and stayed with ‘normal’ ITV1.
Searching this morning with Google, we weren’t the only ones to encounter problems last night — try this DigitalSpy thread for comments from more disgruntled viewers!

John, Rick, Shofty, Stevie H, Steve, Duncan — thanks for your comments, guys.
Getting ITV HD to work on your Sky+ box seems to be a very hit-and-miss affair. Sometimes the channel itself experiences problems (as per the Liverpool game), and sometimes it appears that some of the boxes can ‘hold on’ to a previous problem (even though the channel may be transmitting normally) until the box is re-booted — see some of the comments on page 5 of this Digital Spy discussion topic. Clearly, there’s a lot of trial and error going on amongst Sky+ users — and neither Sky nor ITV are likely to offer any help, since they don’t want us watching it via Sky anyway!
So we’re on our own, folks, we have to try and help each other out — and on that subject: does anyone have any suggestions for Duncan, who’s lost ITV1?

Aren’t HDMI leads the ones with the copy-control signal? I don’t like my video devices dictating what I can and can’t timeshift or format-shift.
markB says:
January 16th, 2010
11:01 am
Well, to be honest there’s no point spending huge amounts on expensive HDMI leads — the signal is digital so it’s either OK or not. Obviously a £1.99 set from a bloke on a market stall may well be of poor construction, bad connections may break down. I think the main thing is to look to see if it is 1080p compatible — is it xyz compatable apparently gives better colour rendition. I had a pack of 2 gold plated medion 2 meter cables from Aldis for £6 — can’t be bad, but no difference to the standard one from Sky tbh — but hey, whatever makes you feel good ehh
So if you have money to burn by all means buy the best of the best, but don’t be suprised when your mate gets the same picture as you with a £5 or £10 set of leads — or in my case a pack of 2 for £6.

Lorna — no, no need to uninstall it, just change to the next channel of your choice by using the number buttons on your remote as you would normally do.
Next time you want to view ITV HD (when they actually broadcast something in HD – at all other times you’ll see a caption on the screen saying “This programme is unavailable in HD”), go to the TV Guide, get into the top menu and sroll to Options, then drop down and select Other Channels, then drop down into the apparently empty box, select 10510, and press Select.

I’ve been having trouble for MONTHS now with some of my HD channels — including BBC HD, E4HD, FXHD and a small number of others — that will not work when the input being used on the box is input 1. If something’s already being recorded on input 1 and the box has to use input 2 to view or record one of these affected channels, it works OK — but if they’re coming in on input 1, the signal loses its ‘lock’ and the strength drops to zero; I get either a pixellated, freezing picture or, more often, ‘no satellite signal is being received’. As soon as I switch back to a standard channel (or an unaffected HD channel such as Channel 4 HD or Sky 1 HD)), the signal ‘lock’ restores immediately, signal strength returns to normal and it works fine again.
This has been driving me mental for ages. I’ve swapped the cables round on the back of the box to see if the problem’s at the dish, but it’s still input 1 that has a problem, so it seems to be a fault in the box. What I don’t understand is why only SOME of the HD channels don’t work on input 1, while most others DO!
I’m loathe to call Sky because if it’s a SOFTWARE issue that might be addressed in an upgrade at some point soon, I don’t want my box exchanged for someone else’s refurbished box that might still exhibit the same problem because it’s in the software.
Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? In fact, does anyone have exactly the same problem?
It’s a Thomson, Model No 902020, Version No 4E3004, OS Version 1.32B12, EPG Software Wersion sky+8.3.2
Thanks.

Hi Justin — no worries, I went a bit off-topic myself just above you!
Have you tried looking for advice in the Sky User forum?
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/
It’s an unofficial site, but seems well organised and populated. I’ve asked about my problem there now, and the first quick reply I got suggests it’s a problem with the Power Supply Unit (PSU) on my ageing Thomson box.
Justin says:

Ah thanks so much I’ll try there
Yes your box sounds like it has the common fault with these boxes, I actually had a very similar problem with mine and that’s what sky told me was wrong with it.
This was all within the first month of my new set up being installed and un beknown to me at the time I was sent a replacement which turned out to be a reconditioned box and this again went faulty, including a very loud whiring sound if left on standby for a few hours, not sure if this was the hard drive?
Only when I threatened to cancel my subscription many more months down the line did they replace my box with a brand new one.
Anyway I have now cancelled due to not getting enough time to justify the monthly cost, but now seems I may be stuck with a fairly useless HD box in terms of a PVR
Seems a shame to bin it and having to buy another type of box just for recording

Thanks a million Bob, finally got it working again after removing the channels and trying again whilst ITV HD was broadcasting….they are other guides on the internet but none mention the problem with the Amstrad box and having to delete and re-input the HD channels in add channels.
Thanks again.

Ryan — sorry, no idea!
Pete — that’s odd. Again, no idea! After dropping down to highlight the Frequency, you should just be able to use your remote to put in the numbers 1,1,4,2,7 and then press “Select”, then drop down again to highlight Polarisation and press the right scroll key to change it to “H”, then press the yellow button to “Find Channels”.

Andy — Well, it’s about time! Thanks for letting us know.
Pity though – this post has been by far the most successful item I’ve ever published, and each time there’s been a football match on ITV HD my site’s hit-count has soared from the average of about 100 a day to well over 500! I’ll miss those hits …
Glad I’ve been able to help so many people!
