Watch ITV HD On Your Sky HD Box

By Somerset Bob

ITV HD is only available via FreeSat. Sky HD subscribers can’t receive it. At least, that’s the official line. So you might think you need to buy yet another set-top box or a TV with FreeSat built-in — but that’s not the case.

ITV HD logo - copyright ITV.comITV’s HD Q&A Help page states: ITV HD is only available through freesat, so you’ll need a satellite dish and either a TV with freesat HD built in (available soon), or a freesat HD digital box connected to an HD Ready TV. Many Sky HD subscribers are annoyed that they cannot watch ITV’s HD programming because it’s excluded from Sky HD’s channel listings — not that there’s much on ITV in HD at present, but in many ways that makes its absence from the Sky HD platform all the more frustrating for those who’ve already invested money in an HD TV and a Sky HD box: every bit of HD programming, especially from the established terrestrial channels, is precious precisely because there’s so little of it around.

UPDATE 02 APRIL 2010 — ITV HD is now officially available on the Sky HD EPG on channel 178. Thanks to everyone who’s posted comments on this item during the last 12 months. Further comments are now disabled.

Well, it is possible to watch ITV HD via Sky HD (though functionality is reduced) — you just need to know how to tell your box how to receive it.

To receive the ITV HD channel through the SKY HD box it must be added as an Other Channel via the updated version of the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), if it’s been automatically downloaded and installed by Sky on your HD box (being upgraded throughout March – May. Note: I’m told you cannot add ITV HD to the older version of the EPG. You must wait for the automatic upgrade. You’ll know when you’ve been upgraded because the look of the new EPG is completely different from the old one.)

However, because the ITV HD channel doesn’t appear in the main list of channels in the EPG, there is no live pause and it can’t be recorded — and currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen saying “This programme is unavailable on ITV1 HD” (note: on 7th December 2009, it was noticed that this new caption had replaced the previous one saying the service is “currently unavailable”). Still, it’s useful to have it for things like football games, etc.

To add ITV HD, go to the TV Guide, find Options in the top menu, then drop down and scroll along to Add Channels.

Change the Frequency details to 11.427 and press Select. (Nothing happens.) Then change Polarisation to H. Leave the Symbol Rate as 27.5 and FEC as 2/3. Then press the yellow button for Find Channels.

On the next page, there should be several services listed. Scroll down to Channel 10510 and press Store Channel. A tick will appear next to Channel 10510. This is the channel name for ITV HD, and it’s now stored in the box.

To view the channel, go to the TV Guide, find Options in the top menu, then drop down and scroll along to Other Channels. Drop the cursor into the apparently empty listing box — and Channel 10510 will then appear. Select the channel.

A bit complicated, but it’s better than not having access to it at all!

Hope this works! Let me know how you get on.

UPDATE: 11 December 2009: a number of people have recently left comments about seeing the message ‘no satellite signal being received’ after adding the channel. It seems to be affecting mainly Amstrad boxes. If you see this message, the cure seems to be to remove the channel (and any others that may have appeared in the ‘Other Channels’ list), then try adding ITV HD (10510) again using the above process. If that doesn’t work: remove it again and wait until ITV HD is actually broadcasting an HD programme (currently there are only a few, at peak time, each week — check a listings magazine such as Radio Times for details), then try adding it. Thanks to Dan C and Andy (who both posted on 10th December 2009) and others who’ve discovered this ‘fix’ by trial and error.

Tony B (10th December 2009) has noticed that Emmerdale — broadcast nightly at 7pm, usually for 30 minutes — is also appearing now on the ITV HD channel, though it doesn’t yet seem to be listed as such anywhere! Having watched a few minutes of it myself the other night, I’m not convinced it’s actually made in HD — it looks ‘cleaner’ than it does on ‘standard’ ITV1, but it doesn’t exhibit the resolution I’d expect from an HD programme.

  1. Hi, I have just done this and I have the screen you mention which is a good start — do you know if, when I am watching ITV HD, it will affect any recordings I am doing?

    Thanks
    Bobby

  2. Hi Bobby, thanks for your comment — yes, it’s possible to watch the ITV HD channel whilst recording another channel — I’ve just tried it. The ITV HD channel occupies one LNB on the satellite dish while the channel being recorded occupies the other.

Here’s an interesting page explaining what an LNB (Low Noise Block) is and how it works: Satellite LNB: What It Is and How Does It Work

    :)

  3. The Sky lies, control-freakery and sub-standard receivers continue into HD, huh? Not that ITV are helping with their freesat-only message.

  4. Headbolt says:

I have just tried this but I do not get a Channel called 10510

    All I get are these

    Brit Shorts
    RADIO SHEPHERD
    HINRG LOWNRG
    WELL CLASS
    GROOVE
    -

Added them all, nothing that seemed to be ITV HD, any ideas ?

  5. Headbolt — Hmm, looks like you’re missing a few other channels — labelled “FreesatHome”, “FreesatCommonC”, “FreesatSSU” and “FreesatOAD” (and a “Teletext” channel) — which, although they don’t seem to have anything on them, are obviously something to do with the batch of FreeSat channels available to a “normal” Freesat viewer, of which 10510 is also one. If they’re all missing, along with 10510, it sounds like your dish/box isn’t receiving any of the FreeSat channels for some reason. The other channels you see are, I would imagine, not part of the FreeSat package as, apart from “Brit Shorts”, they are (not very good) audio-only services, carrying music-based channels.

That’s my guess at what’s going on.

  6. Headbolt — you haven’t yet got the new planner upgrade (being automatically rolled out during April and May). This is the result you get using the legacy planner software. Wait til you get the new version then try again.

  7. Terry — thanks for that comment and helping to clear up Headbolt’s problem. Much appreciated.

  8. Somerset Bob, you are a legend :-)

I’ve Had Sky HD since the first day it launched (currently on 3rd Skybox but that’s another story) and cursed ITV’s lack of football in HD which looks rubbish on a large plasma (and I am not buying Free Sat either).

I wish I’d known this before the Champions league Quarter finals and the FA Cup semi, but I shall look forward to the rest of the games.

Thanking you kindly — as are my three mates, who are now eagerly waiting for their menus to be upgraded.

    Thanks, Rob!

  9. Rob — you’re very welcome. Always happy to help another football fan!

    :)

  10. Is it possible to add ITV HD as a favourite channel? Am going to get HD, just deciding which way to go.

  11. Hi, I’ve just tried to get the HD channel as you’ve shown, but after doing this the channel is coming up “ITV HD is currently unavailable”.

  12. Hi Dean — I don’t know the answer for sure, as I’ve not tried it on my box, but I suspect the answer is “no” because the channel is not included in the ‘official’ channels listed in the EPG.

Craig — This is correct. ITV HD only transmits programmes that are in the HD format. It does not transmit all of ITV’s output all of the time. That’s why I wrote: “currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen.” Check a listings magazine (such as Radio Times) and look to see which ITV programmes are being simulcast in HD. (There aren’t that many at present.)

  13. I should have known that — cheers Bob

  14. No problem, Craig!

    :)

  15. Rossifumi says:

Is there anyway to trigger the latest EPG upgrade download to enable me to get ITV HD?

  16. Rossifumi — not that I know of. I think you have to wait for Sky to do it from their end.

  17. Hi everyone, great guide — however, I can’t do the first step, i.e. (Change the Frequency details to 11.427 and press Select). I just don’t get an option to change the frequency — any ideas?

    Thank you.

  18. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my God, I hate football on ITV’s poor pic quality, but can now watch in HD glory. Thank You!

  19. Hi Mark — It might seen silly of me to ask, but: has your EPG been updated to the latest version? (A few people have not realised the above instructions only work on the upgraded EPG.) If it has, and scrolling down to Frequency and then trying to enter the number sequence one, one, four, two, seven (you just ignore the decimal point) using the remote keypad has no effect, then I’m stumped. Perhaps another reader might know what’s wrong!

Hi Colin — glad you’re another satisfied customer! Thanks for letting me know!

    :)

  20. I guess it’s possible my EPG hasn’t been updated yet — how would I know?

  21. Mark — You’ll know. It looks and operates completely differently from the old version :)

  22. marts2smooth says:

Changing the frequencies about won’t effect my box or any other channels, will it?

  23. Paul Redmond says:

    Hi Bob,

my new sky EPG has arrived today. I have found ITV HD and have stored it as other channels. At this moment in time I am just getting the ITV hd logo with an information notice that says ‘This service is currently unavailable’. Have you seen this yourself ?

    Best wishes

    Paul

  24. marts2smooth — no, as far as I know, there is no risk to your other saved chanels or the normal operation of your box. Adding other channels is a legitimate process for the Sky+ HD box — we’re not doing anything illegal or anything that invalidates our Sky subscriptions, it’s just a process that’s not been given much official publicity. Once you’ve changed the frequency and the polarisation and added the appropriate channel, you’ll see that the settings in the “Add Channels” section have reverted to their default values the next time you go to it.

Hey Paul, good to hear from you. Yes, I’ve seen that caption — please see above in the main item (and to Craig in the above comments): “currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen.” ITV doesn’t produce much output in HD at present, so their HD channel only goes “live” when there is actually something in HD to transmit!

    :)

  25. Paul Redmond says:

Thanks Bob. Hope that they broadcast the x factor in HD when it comes back this autumn.

Talking of all things visual, have you seen any 3D recently. Went to cinema to see monsters and aliens. 3D has certainly improved. It was very impressive. No red/green cardboard glasses. The glasses are plastic, fit very well. The glasses are Poly….something ?

Thanks for all the info on HD.

  26. No problem, Paul — no, haven’t seen any 3D cinema yet, but I’m sure I’ll like it!

Mind you, I’ll probably wait for Sky to bring it to us on our TVs — http://sn.im/h2u5y — Sky HD Goes 3D: Technology To Develop 3D Television Being Created

  27. marts2smooth says:

    cheers Bob for the info!

  28. Jackie says:

Thanks for your easy set up instructions, works a treat and now have the programme stored. The only query is I’m getting a screen saying ‘this service is currently unavailable’?
Could this be simply ITV are not broadcasting in HD at the time I’m selecting the channel, or have I done something wrong?

  29. Hi Jackie — No, you’ve done nothing wrong — as I said in my item (and also in reply to the comments from Craig and Paul raising the same query): “currently it only shows programmes that are transmitted in HD. The rest of the time there is just a caption on the screen.”

The only listings magazine I use is Radio Times, so I don’t know about other mags, but RT indicates which ITV programmes are scheduled to be simulcast in HD on the ITV HD channel by stating, in small print under the programme details, “Simulcast in HD for Freesat HD viewers only, via the red button”. Obviously, in our case we go to channel 10510 in our Other Channels list.

ITV HD programmes are currently few and far between — looking back over this week, for example, there was a two-hour long late film on Monday night (The 40 Year Old Virgin), two and a half hours of Champions League football on Tuesday night and part one of the drama series Boy Meets Girl on Friday night which was one hour long, making a grand total of five and a half hours of HD on ITV for the entire week. Not exactly a big reward for those who’ve lashed out money on a Freesat box because they’ve been led to believe that “ITV HD is only available through freesat” (ITV’s statement, not mine).

    Spread the word, folks! :)

  30. Job done!!! Well chuffed!!! Looking forward to Man U v. Arsenal on Tuesday in HD glory!!!
    xxx

  31. Hi Lu Lu — glad it worked for you. Thanks for letting me know :)

  32. I have gone through all the steps and when it comes to the final one of selecting the ITV DIgital 10510 to watch it, it shows a message “to get non Sky subscribed channels etc…” But your system allows me to do everything else.

    Any suggestions?

  33. Fiona — wow, no, sorry. No-one’s reported that as a problem so far!

Have you definitely been upgraded to the new EPG? (You’ll know if you have — it looks completely different from the previous one.) Oh, but wait — you must have been, if you were able to follow all the steps outlined above.

Perhaps another reader might know what the problem is — watch this space!

  34. I have entered all of the correct settings, but I am only receiving audio. Any suggestions?

  35. Durham Keith says:

[Note from Bob: I've not tried this so I can't vouch for it myself, but you're welcome to try -- at your own risk! This site accepts no liability if something goes wrong ...]

Hi, I believe it is possible to force an update so that you get the new EPG. Switch the box off at the wall, hold down the Back-up button on the BOX (NOT THE REMOTE) and then switch the box back on at the wall and it will update — make sure not to interrupt the box once the update has started.

  36. Andy — Sorry it’s not working properly. No, I’ve no idea what’s wrong. Can anyone help?

Durham Keith — thanks for your suggestion. Forgive the additional caveat, but I’m sure you understand why I’ve added it.

    :)

  37. All working for me, even though not the result I wanted watching it last night!

  38. richard says:

Is it possible to do a manual recording of ITV HD ? I am still on standard definition – I ‘m waiting for the rumoured new hardware to appear.

I’m hoping for a bigger harddrive ( or at least the ability to use the full 300gb for sky +) & full 5.1 down the HDMI

  39. Hi Nick — glad it’s working for you. Shame it didn’t influence the result for you too!

Hi Richard — no, as far as I can make out, it’s not possible to manually record ITV HD on a Sky+ HD box. (I just had a look for you.) The Manual Recording channel number input field will only accept the three-digit channel numbers (or four digits for radio streams) contained in the EPG’s ‘official’ channel listing.

  40. marts2smooth says:

    Hiya people,

I’ve tried to get the channel but its not there? I’ve read above that I may need the new guide interface? Any ideas how I get it on my box so I can watch ITV HD?

Bit off topic — sorry :(

  41. marts2smooth — have a read of Durham Keith’s comment above (May 6th). He describes how he thinks you can force the box to upgrade. (Please also note that as I haven’t tried it myself, I can’t vouch for it!)

    :)

  42. Hi — I’ve done as explained and got the 10510 and stored it — where do i find it after???? Am I being thick ere? lol

  43. Hi aj — as I explained in my post:

To view the channel, go to the TV Guide, find Options in the top menu, then drop down and scroll along to Other Channels. Drop the cursor into the apparently empty listing box — and Channel 10510 will then appear. Select the channel.

  44. marts2smooth says:

I’m trying to force the upgrade — after I’ve switched it back on at the wall, I hold the BACKUP button down on the box — do I need to switch the box on before this (i.e. how do I know if it’s updating, etc.)?

  45. Durham Keith says:

Hi marts2smooth — switch off at wall-press and hold the back-up button on the box and keep it held down while you switch back on and until the box has booted back up again. You will see on screen the “updating software” message.

  46. Durham Keith — thanks for stepping in and helping marts2smooth out! Much appreciated.

    :)

  47. Darren says:

I don’t think you can force the EPG upgrade. About a month ago my Thompson SKY HD box died, it had upgraded itself to the new EPG before it packed up. I replaced it with a brand new PACE HD box which did not have the new EPG out of the box. I forced a software upgrade, it had no effect, the box still had the old EPG. As of 22nd MAY my Pace box has downloaded the new EPG during the night. I think Sky is rolling out the new EPG based upon your manufacturer. My system details are : Model PACE 2.2.222, Version 9F3003, operating system 1.32B12, EPG software sky+8.4.0.MultiPlatform.v.3.0.0

I received an email from Sky the day before the update informing me that my system was about to get the new EPG.

    Hope the info helps.

  48. Hi Darren — thanks for that useful information.

I’m sure it must be very frustrating for those that still haven’t received the EPG upgrade, but it does seem that Sky have had a planned schedule in place for some time, and they’re sticking to it. I recall reading somewhere else that they were doing it based on box manufacturers. For the record, mine’s a Thomson, it was upgraded back in late March or early April (I’ve forgotten exactly when) — and I received a letter and brochure about it in the post a couple of days prior to it being done overnight.

  49. marts2smooth says:

No — it tried to force it, but nothing happened.

I’ve got Amstrad boxes so I’ll just wait :)

    Thanks guys!

  50. Worked for me.
Thanks very much indeed! Wish I had found this earlier!

  51. Hi KC — thanks for your comment, delighted it worked for you!

    :)

  52. mark seager says:

Recieved the new EPG this morning (Pace HD box). First thing I did was tried for ITV — all works fine, except when selected I get the message “no signal received”. Is this normal? The channel is stored in my Other Channel section, but can’t pick it up, or it’s not broadcasting.

  53. Hi Mark — you might have a problem. As far as I know, the ITV HD channel is online 24/7, but when it is NOT actually broadcasting any programmes, the ITV HD logo is displayed with a caption saying “This service is currently unavailable”. (I’ve just checked on my Thomson box, and this is what is currently being displayed.)

If you’re seeing a message saying “No signal received” it sounds like your dish, or the box, is not receiving the signal properly.

Unfortunately I don’t know why this is happening — but perhaps other readers of this item might be able to provide you with some further advice, so please keep checking back here.

  54. Rodder says:

I’m having the same problem — “no signal is being received”.

  55. Hi there — got the new EPG though on Sky, tried to get ITV HD on with all the things said, but all I get is no satellite signal when I go to channel 10510. Am I doing anything wrong?

  56. Hello: I’ve been upgraded to the new Sky HD EPG this morning. First thing I tried was to get ITV HD to run. I’ve followed the steps posted here, all fine i.e. station 10510 stored. I ignored all the other freesat channels, but when I try to view all I get is no satellite signal being received.

    :(

My box is only a few weeks old and is a Pace model — my first box went phutt in four hours. Is there any solution to this please?

    Thanks in advance.

  57. Hi Rodder, Ron and MarkB — as the three of you, along with Mark Seager, are all experiencing the same problem, this suggests to me that it’s not your fault.

Two possible answers come to mind:

    1) Maybe it’s the box type/model — I see that two out of the four of you are on Pace boxes (the other two didn’t mention what boxes you have). Mine is a Thomson. Perhaps this makes a difference.

    2) Maybe Sky have now plugged the ‘hole’ in the EPG software that allows the signal through, preventing those that have been more recently upgraded from processing the ITV HD channel signal. Those of us who have been able to receive the signal up till now might soon find ourselves being blocked from doing so when our new EPGs are updated again at some point in the future.

I’m afraid I have no workarounds to suggest, but hopefully other readers might have. Watch this space!

UPDATE: On the Facebook group (from where I got the original instructions for adding the ITV HD channel), two interesting postings:

On 12 March, a member wrote a post asking if anyone else had heard about certain boxes, manufactured by Pace, being recalled. (Their box had, apparently, been recalled. They were given three months free HD subscription for their troubles.) On the same day, they replied to their own post with: “I found this on a Google search … The issue relates to the way in which some of the boxes in the batch were assembled. In particular, it involves the internal cabling and the quality of the connections between components. This means that the build quality of a box that was part of this batch may not meet Sky’s standards.”

On 18 May, a different member wrote on the group’s Wall: “At a glance yes the new EPG is good but it is full of bugs!!! Keep getting the “No Signal” even though all signal and quality bars are full. The time on the TV Guide is about 10mins behind, sound keeps going plus the usual fail recordings!!!!!”

I have to say I’ve not experienced anything like those bugs on my Thomson box with the new EPG — but the “no signal” bug sounds familiar … !

  58. My first Pace box crashed in four hours — kept going to a blank green screen, couldn’t use Sky plus, remote failed to control box, box turned off. Eventually, even the remote packed up.

Called Sky, had the usual shpeel, turn off box, disconnect cables, bla bla bla, every time I called them over a four day period. Unfortunately this hapened on a bank holiday weekend just gone, even the engineer who brought and set up replacement was amazed that even the remote control had totally failed (although he did try new batteries when I was out of the room), but this new Pace box works OK up to now — but have noticed fluctuations in the signal strength/quality in new EPG.

My father has a Samsung box and when he called Sky about not having the updated EPG (lives five minutes walk from me) was told that Sky were doing it by make, i.e. Thomson first it would seem, then Pace, and so on. But am disappointed that I’m not able to get the ITV HD channel and there’s no way I’m gonna pay 130 bucks for a box to watch one channel and one or two progs a week lol …

On your last comment you said maybe they fixed the EPG loophole that allows Sky boxes to pick up ITV HD, but why do that?? Surely ITV couldn’t force them to block a technically free to air service.

  59. Hi MarkB — I suspect your experience with a dodgy box is by no means unique, and I’m sorry it’s been such a nightmare for you.

What I said about Sky possibly blocking reception of ITV HD on Sky HD boxes was merely supposition on my part. I have no idea whether they can actually achieve that technically. But if they can, the answer to “why do that” seems obvious to me: because ITV would like to tempt viewers into buying a FreeSat box or TV because they, along with the BBC, have invested money in setting up FreeSat as an alternative to Sky. They might also like to make sure their statement that “ITV HD is only available through freesat” is factually true, which it patently isn’t all the while it can be added as an Other Channel on Sky HD boxes. I daresay they’re not very happy with the likes of me telling people how to do it!

  60. mark seager says:

Someone suggested I remove the added channels, do a reboot of box, then re-add channels …

Did this and now have ITV HD. Was suggested may need to do it once or twice, but worked first time for me!

  61. Hi Mark — that’s excellent news! Thanks for taking the time to come back and share it. Hopefully, this suggestion will work for other viewers who hit similar problems.

    :)

  62. Yes I can confirm that in my case, after rebooting the box then removing the added channels, then adding them, doesn’t work [my bad]. The correct way (as stated by Mark Seager) is to FIRST remove the added channels, THEN reboot your box i.e. turn off, remove all connections etc., wait a moment then reconnect the cables etc, power up your box, go through the procedure to add ITV HD, and — voila — this time it worked for me any ways. So thanks Mark Seager, must now wait for the elusive ITV HD content to see what all the fuss is about!

    :)

Today ITV HD, tomorrow a Sky Sports/Sky Movies work around he he ;)

  63. MarkB — ha ha, now steady on! I don’t mind promoting a workaround to get something that’s otherwise free-to-air anyway, but I’m afraid I’ll have to draw the line there!

    :)

  64. Would this work when/if Channel 4 and any other current Sky channels go to FreeSat, as long as we get the frequency, etc.?

  65. MarkB — I don’t know, so I’ll leave that for our panel of contributors to address if they can!

    :)

  66. I had to reboot twice for it to work, but now I have ITV HD I’m a happy man.

  67. Hi blaine — glad it worked for you! Thanks for letting me know.

    :)

  68. Has anyone else’s signal strength/quality worsened slightly since the new EPG? My pic doesn’t seem quite as good.

Also, any thoughts on proposed ITV monthly charge and possible disappearance of ITV channels from Freeview?

  69. mark seager says:

Definitely — this was the first thing I noticed. My signal strength has definitely dropped, according to the new EPG.

  70. Mine’s gone from a full bar for signal strength to just over half, and my picture just doesn’t seem quite as good??

  71. Anyone else NOT had the EPG upgrade!? Am a new bod to sky (installed yesterday) and seem to have the old EPG on my new box! Any ideas as to when, or indeed IF, I’ll get an upgraded EPG?!

  72. Fudskie says:

Well it’s not new, but hey, it is simple to achieve …

    If you go to http://www.satcodx2.com/0282/eng/
this gives you the channel listing for Astra (Sky Satellite). Just look for the frequencies associated with the channel group you want (e.g. Freesat) and then add them as mentioned above. They don’t appear in the Sky EPG of course, but as mentioned above you access them in the Other Channel listing section.

You can do this with any Sky box of course, but you only get the HD channels if you have an HD IRD. There are a few channels, so add them and see …

  73. Hi DaveM — thanks for your comment, and I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed about the lack of new EPG on your new setup. How frustrating!

It seems Sky have a pre-defined schedule of upgrades. I can only assume you’re on their list and that it WILL come through eventually.

Fudskie — wow, that looks like a very comprehensive listing! I’ll leave it for others to play with, as I’m quite happy with my setup — but thanks for taking the trouble to post information about it here.

    :)

  74. Fudskie says:

    Hello,

Sometimes it is worth doing a forced upgrade to get the new EPG, the Sky installer is meant to do it on install, but they don’t always do it as it takes time, etc.

To do a forced software upgrade, do the following:

    1) put your HD box in standby mode

    2) hold your finger on the Back Up Button on the top of the Set top Box NOT ON THE REMOTE

    3) KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE BACK UP BUTTON (DO NOT LET GO) then pull the power lead out and put it back in after 10 seconds.

    4) KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE BACK UP BUTTON and wait for all the lights on the front panel to light up. At this point you can let go of the Back Up Button. BUT not before the panel lights up on the front.

You then get a message on screen saying Upgrading Software – DO NOT power off the box !! It will switch itself back in to standy when it has finished.

It may take up to two minutes to be able to switch the standby back on to ON status as it reloads itself and then boots back up.

This will ensure that you have the latest software and I have found has also made the HD boxes we install for Sky Business have the latest EPG. No I do not work for Sky either before you ask, commercial engineering only.

This above is a normal upgrade procedure but I will not be held responsible for any issues of course – this is to be done at your own risk and you may lose any recorded programs on the hard drive … Usual Disclaimer.

  75. Sky are releasing the EPG update in batches of box types, i.e. Thompson, Amstrad, Pace etc. I have a Pace box and recieved the update last week. My parents, who have a Samsung box, are yet to get their update. So hang in there ;)

Has anyone else noticed that picture quality is not so good with this updated EPG/firmware? Mine’s definitely degraded.

  76. Fudski — Thanks for the instructions — as you say, ‘usual disclaimer’: if you try the forced upgrade, neither Fudski nor I can be held responsible if something goes wrong!

markB — I can’t say I’ve noticed any degradation in picture quality here.

  77. mark cunliffe says:

Thanks fudski, I am updating the EPG has we speak!!!!
    ITV HD here I come!!!!

  78. Perhaps it’s my crappy Toshiba LCD then ;) knew I should have gone for Sony ;)

  79. theturk says:

Here’s a nice, screen capture step by step guide to setting up ITV HD. I just set it up for the England Andorra match and it works just as all the comments say
    http://www.tellytoad.com/page/itv-hd-on-sky-hd.aspx

Just called a friend who has the same box to give him the method, but he doesn’t have the the HD subscription and he has the old style menu. Are these two connected?

  80. Hi theturk — Thanks for that additional info, great to have some screen shots for people to look at.

Yes, I’d think they are connected — I’m guessing no HD subscription equals no EPG upgrade available?

  81. The people forcing upgrade — are you using Samsung boxes? As I have a Pace box and recieved the update a little while ago, yet my parents (Samsung box] yet to get update, so are you forcing Samsung boxes to update to new EPG succesfully?

    ;)

  82. All is now well, I lost this site and could not update my post. All I did was remove ITV HD and other manual channels and re-did it over again. Over two weeks of trouble free ITV HD.

  83. Halloo — anyone got an updated Samsung yet (and getting ITV HD)?

  84. Hello,

I searched Google cus I heard about ITV HD on Sky and found this site. After one minute I now have it installed and look forward to many programmes (mainly football!!) in super fine HD on my 46″ plasma … many thanks Guys!!!

  85. mark cunliffe says:

I have tried to force my Samsung box to update and it wont! I phoned Sky about the new EPG and he reckons only Pace have been updated with Amstrad to follow next. He said because Samsung have only just started to do Sky+HD boxes we would be the last to update!

Has anyone updated a Samsung box to the new EPG?

  86. Yes Mark (Cunliffe), my parents have a Samsung box and have yet to be up graded to new EPG, so it would appear that Samsung boxes can’t be forced to upgrade to new EPG :( That aside, my signal strength/quality has gone real bad since I got new EPG/firmware on my Pace box, it’s all over the place :(

  87. Stephen Powers says:

I had Sky+HD installed literally a couple of weeks ago, and would have thought the new EPG would be already installed on the box (which is an Amstrad receiver). I’m getting worried now as Champions League football will be soon upon us, and I rather fancied watching it in HD via ITV HD, which I believe you can only get if you have the new EPG. Does anybody know if it will be available by Autumn time?

  88. Fred Bloggs says:

There is no such thing as a forced update.

All that going through the process described above does is tell the box to download and install the last version that was assigned for use by your particular box.

If Sky haven’t allocated the new EPG, firmware etc you will simply re-receive the one you already have that was probably working as it should. If the box gets screwed then the warranty of the box may be voided as Sky know when a box is due an upgrade, whether it has attempted an upgrade and of course if a Sky engineer has been to try the procedure.

The only time that an ‘upgrade’ occurs is if you happened to try the described process when your machine has failed a previous attempt at an upgrade but that is very rare as the box will normally re-try over and over again all by itself anyway.

BTW – you can normally tell when you box has received program instructions as it will have rebooted and gone back to the Sky demo channel so when you next switch on afterwards it should be obvious that something has changed.

  89. Fred — oo-er. Thanks for your comments. I’ll let others make of them what they will.

  90. I have tried several times to add ITV HD — I get as far as scanning and finding the channel, then storing it so it has a tick next to it, but then when I go back to TV Guide, Options, Other Channels and drop down into the empty box a message comes up saying “To include channels which are not part of Sky Digital, go to Add Channels”.

This keeps happening. Any ideas, anyone?

  91. Hi Bob,

I have followed all your steps and only get offered a few radio channels :( Is this because I’m in Glasgow (therefore ITV is STV) or the whole EPG thing? I just got my box today and the guy said it’s got the latest software — 1.32A0I , EPG 5.10.jHD. Any advice?

P.S Can I change form Scottish TV to English TV as my default 101, 102, 103? I’m sick of them putting Poirot on when the FA cup final or an England game is on!!!!! Bitter, bitter people.

    Cheers buddy

  92. Adrian, Steve — thanks for dropping by. I’m afraid I don’t know the answers to your questions, so let’s see if any other readers can help.

  93. Thank you SO much
    worked a treat :) :)

  94. Glad to hear it, Fiona!

    :)

  95. stevie w says:

    Thanks Bob!

Brill — works OK on my HD box.

    Thanks a million matey!

    Steve W

  96. Cheers, Stevie! :)

  97. Hi! Is it a must to subscribe to Sky HD, or can you still use the HD box with your SkyPlus card?

  98. http://packages.sky.com/faqs/equipment-and-boxes.aspx

Will I need to subscribe to Sky TV or the HD Pack to watch all the HD channels?

Three HD channels – BBC HD, Channel 4 HD and Luxe TV HD – are available to watch without any subscriptions. To watch these HD channels you will need a Sky+HD box and an HD ready TV (Channel 4 HD requires a valid viewing card).

How about freesat, or wait till freeview freely available, which apparently will be freeview HD by the time of general availability :)

Or you could, if you’re confident, oick up a Sky HD box on eBay for about £80 and just watch the free to air HD channels, inc ITV HD, with the new HD EPG :)

  99. Hi Bob,

after 3 HD+ boxes failing I told Sky to s** off and they let me cancel after 3 months…yay! Got a lot of my money back.

No one has bothered to collect my Sky HD+ box despite me calling and emailing every week, they then said keep it and do as I wish! Haha, so now I can still watch many Sky channels includng a few HD for free,
as the card no longer works, I cannot watch my recorded programs as you don’t get Sky HD+ access once your sub is stopped.

I uploaded the ITV HD just now ok, it works. So thanks for that! Worked fine (just no programmes yet this week on the ITV HD schedule).

Do you know of any way I can still watch my old recorded Sky HD+ programmes?

    Cheers…

btw: before my Sky HD+ sub was switched off, the EPG guide updated! Yay!

  100. Steve — ITV can be found on channel 993, ITV1 London.

  101. Thanks for continuing the discussion while I’ve been on holiday!

    Roy – I don’t know.

Roger — no, I’m afraid I don’t know how you can access your already-recorded programmes :(

  102. I’ve just read on http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/ that ITV are launching ITV1 HD, similiar to CH4HD, won’t this mean that they legally have to put it on SKY HD as it is now a ‘proper’ channel?

  103. Hi Nick — thanks for stopping by.

Interesting question. Anyone know the answer?

  104. I’d be very surprised if any law would compel ITV to buy Sky’s overpriced non-standard EPG service.

Please, complain to Sky about their restrictive EPG policy. It’s not really ITV’s fault that Sky is pay-to-play.

  105. The reason I ask is that I read somewhere that all of the main HD channels must be made available to watch on all different platforms. The only reason it is not on the EPG now is because they get round it by offering it as an interactive “Red Button” service. Not sure if any of this is true but hopefully ITV HD will appear on SKY EPG soon.

  106. deVere Forster says:

Just added ITV HD to my Sky HD box thanks to your very clear instructions above …. thanks so so much.

Just need to find out how to add UTV (Ulsters version of ITV) and RTE onto my box too !! Anyone out there know how to do that ???

    TIA

    deVere Forster

  107. Sky HD Pace unit not working, mine would not work with the 11.427 as I got no satellite signal being received, but did work with 11.428 frequency no problems.

    cheers

  108. UTV’s details should be on sites like lyngsat.com under FreeTV UK. I don’t think there’s a UTV HD yet.

I think RTE still requires an Irish-registered Sky keycard.

  109. Hi,

I have a Sky HD box but have cancelled the HD subscription, however my “Anytime” set up contiues to pre-record HD channels that I can not watch – due to no HD subcription. Is it possible to set up anytime to record non HD channels ?

    Cheers,

  110. Just tried the workround for ITV HD. Fab!! It works. Thank you so much Bob.

  111. Hi,

I also have followed the guidance for ITV HD and it works perfectly,
    Many thanks. Johnny

  112. Hi Michael, hi Johnny — glad it worked for you! Enjoy the football :)

  113. HI Bob

a little confused. theres no option in Tv Guide, i have to go via services, system set up and then add channels. I cant seem to change the frequency, tho i can change the pol but when finding channels i get all sorts (i.e music kids etc but no channel 10510)

Ive just had sky HD installed a couple weeks ago and have the Smasung box, tried the force update but didnt seem to work. Am i missing something?

    Any ideas?

    Jas

  114. Knight2000 says:

Hi Guys, First a Big thanks for Bob for allowing us ITV HD on sky hd :)

My problem is in the new EPG, in that the old EPG allowed you to alter the volume on the box so when I had the old EPG my Pioneer amp would be on about -30db and the sound was good. Now with the new EPG I have to have my amp on about -20 to get the same sound level. When I use another source such as DVD etc, that’s still good or play music. I am awaiting an answer from Sky, but looking at other forums they say that this is a fault with the new EPG??
    Any ideas
    thanks
    John

  115. @ Jas::: currently the samsung hd boxes do noy have and cannot be forced to update to the new ‘epg’.teh new epg is rolled out by box manufacturer, ive read elsewhere that in fact samsung boxes are next and are infact just about to be updated to new epg, you’ll prolly receive comformation through post as to when its imminent.see below ;)

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a175826/samsung-sky-hd-boxes-to-get-epg-update.html

  116. Allan Alexander says:

Great idea – I tried this, went through the info as you said, my system did not find any new channels at all. Using a Thomson Sky HD box plus all the right bits HD TV etc. Any ideas why ??

  117. Hi guys got itv hd on my sky box but no sound ! any ideas ?

  118. I think that there is a way to force the EPG download! On the front of your box press backup and hold it in! Then disconnect from mains and reconnect! Wait 20 secs while still holding backup (do not let go of back up) — this will then download a software update! And no it won’t delete anything off your planner as it’s just updating the software. Hope this helps :)

    John

  119. Hi
An old problem, apparently. Can’t find Channel 10510 among the new channels (only Brit Shorts, etc). Had my Sky+HD box installed by Sky end of Sept. so I guess I have got the updated version of epg. Any suggestions?

  120. Fantastic!! Thanks Bob!!! Instruction were brilliant!! Just one thing, I had to press ‘Enter’ after pressing the yellow button to put a tick against channel 10510. Once I did this I could see the channel in the TV guide etc…..

    Cheers!

  121. As I am a chicken and don’t much care for tech can someone asure me that when I start changing frequency numbers etc I’m not going to muck up my box and lose all my other channels. I imagine Sky wouldn’t be much help if I did.

  122. Hi Steve,

Sorry for the delay in publishing your comment and replying!

As far as I know, if you follow the instructions as I’ve outlined in my original post above, there is no chance of mucking up your other programme settings. I’ve gone through the process myself and everything was fine. Other people have done it too, with no problem.

There are other comments that talk about forcing the EPG upgrade if your box hasn’t already upgraded itself — I cannot vouch for these personally, as I have not had to carry them out, so you should be a little more cautious if you’re going to try following them.

    :)

  123. Michael Heaton says:

This is excellent — I’m telling everyone I know! Thank you.

  124. gary mumford says:

    All works great — thanks!

  125. Hi Michael and Gary — Glad you found it useful!

    :)

  126. marts2smooth says:

Hiya guys, Any ideas how I can add ITVHD to my favourites? Is the only way I can view this channel is via the setup? and view “other channels”?

  127. marts2smooth — As far as I know, ITVHD can’t be added to your favourites because it’s not listed amongst the ‘normal’ channels in the EPG. So the only way to view it is to select it via the “other channels” list.

Unless, of course, someone else knows differently …?

    :)

  128. For what it’s worth, here are my comments on downloading the ‘new EPG’.

Firstly, when you boot your Sky box by holding the back-up button etc., you download the EPG — takes about 10 mins, but this new EPG will not work until switched on by Sky.

If your box make has been switched on by Sky you should get the new EPG within hours, or perhaps a couple of days. However if your make of box has not yet been triggered by Sky, you will have to wait until they do switch you on. Sky will send you an email two days before they switch you on. The new EPG does not lower your signal strength — it’s digital, so you get the signal or you don’t. The more important measurement is Signal Quality: this needs to be high because it includes other parameters needed for consistent reception and picture quality.

    Hope this helps someone.

  129. BobH — thanks for taking the time to leave your comment. Some info there that I don’t think we’ve seen before. You certainly sound like you speak from experience!

    :)

  130. just been told by my parents and a few work mates that their samsung boxes have no got the new epg :) …. so happy days ;)

  131. Hi Bob,

Thanks 4 the info, now set up for ITV HD the cheecky monkeys.

    Thanks Sara

  132. Hi Mark — Glad it’s working out OK!

Hi Sara — thanks for your comment! Happy viewing!

    :)

  133. Yea Bob :: I had my ITVHD and new EPG months ago, but my father was a little peeved as he had his HD box some months before me, his being a Samsung box and mine a Pace box, so he’s only just been able to get the ITV HD channel. Let’s hope for more content ehh ;) But if ITV do indeed change channel to ITVHD with all rest of schedule being upscaled, won’t they then put it onto the Sky network??

  134. Merrymax69 says:

Many thanks for info, nice and simple to follow and now watching drama in HD!! ta mate xx

  135. marB — I don’t know the answer to your question, but I would imagine that if ITV do pump everything out to their HD channel, so that the gaps between proper HD-formatted programmes are filled with programmes not actually filmed/made in HD, then that would probably justify adding it to the EPG. But who knows how the minds of the ITV executives work?

Merrymax69 — No problem! I watched Collision in HD last night and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the rest of this week’s nightly episodes now!

    :)

  136. Took delivery of my Sky HD (Amstrad)box last week expecting to see the new EPG. Have tried to force the download but still stuck with the old one. Does anybody have any idea when I might be switched on?

  137. Bob — done everything as you say; when I go to veiw 10510 I get the screen saying satellite signal not available?

  138. Hi Andy — oh dear. I don’t know why you’re seeing that message. But perhaps someone else can help you — watch this space!

  139. I just don’t understand why I am not getting the page saying ITV HD. Every step I’ve gone through correct. The channel 10510 is there and stored but when I try to view the screen is all blue and saying satellite signal unavailable?

  140. I hope some one can help me. By the way, the new EPG only came on today if that makes any difference?

  141. Sorry I have just checked it again and it tells me when I press to view 10510: no satellite signal recieved?

  142. Andy — I checked my own box just now, and I’m seeing the ITV HD logo and the words “This service is currently unavailable”, which is what is shown when they are not broadcasting any programmes. So everything’s normal at this end.

Mind you, I do seem to recall having occasional problems similar to yours in the past (not specifically related to ITV HD), where one of the two receivers seems to stop working properly.

Have you tried going into standby, unplugging the box from the mains, waiting a couple of minutes, plugging it back in again, waiting another few minutes, then switching it back on? That often clears problems.

  143. Bob, just tried that — still no good. When I press to view, still says no satellite signal received. God it’s driving me mad!

  144. Just tried again Bob. Success at last — it now works fine. Thx for your help.

  145. Andy — Wow! That’s great! Enjoy it!

    :)

  146. Hi Bob, me again. What I have noticed with the new EPG: I have lost signal strength and quality of picture. Why is this?

  147. And is there anything I can do to get back full signal strength and picture quality? I have an Amstrad box.

  148. Hi Andy — looking back through the comments here, two people say they noticed the same thing (MarkB & Mark Seager on June 3rd).

There’s been no further comment about it so far, but at least you’re not alone in thinking you’re experiencing a degradation in signal strength and picture quality.

I’m not sure the two are necessarily linked: as I understand it, with digital transmissions, picture quality doesn’t depend on signal strength: either there IS a picture, or there isn’t. When signal strength drops below the point where a reliable signal can be received and decoded, the picture will suddenly pixillate, freeze, or disappear altogether. Signal strength is dependent on a lot of different factors: in my case, for example, heavy cloud cover and/or heavy rain can disrupt the fragile signal I receive and the picture and sound can break up until the rain passes! Perhaps a prolonged bout of heavy cloud, such as we’ve been experiencing recently, has degraded people’s signal strength?

The actual picture quality is, I think, more to do with the way the box handles the decoding of the received signal: I suppose it’s possible that the new EPG upgrade also changed the algorithm (software) that works to decode (decompress) the information in the signal and then display the picture. But this IS only supposition on my part — I don’t know for sure whether this is so.

It might also depend on whether there have been changes in the way the signal is compressed before being sent out — I’ve read elsewhere that some people are upset with the BBC for lowering the picture quality of BBC HD by deciding to “squash” (compress) the signal into a narrower bandwidth, but I have to say I’ve not really noticed it on my BBC HD pictures. My BBC standard definition pictures are OK; ITV’s are, generally, inferior.

If anyone’s got any proper technical knowledge to share on this aspect of signal and picture degradation, feel free to contribute a comment or three!

    PS Mine’s a Thompson box.

    :)

  149. Had same problem “No satellite signal” after setting up when not broadcasting. Repeated setup process whilst broadcast active and worked no problem.

  150. Hi, there, just gone through the process of adding ITVHD.

Now, I’ve only got a few of the HD channels on my TV guide.

Can you you tell me the default frequency etc. so i can go back to how it was?

    thanks

  151. Hi Charlie — most unusual. You’re the only person to have reported this problem here so far!

The settings on the Add Channels page should have defaulted back to the original figures anyway, but here they are for you:

    Frequency (gHz): 11.778

    Polarisation: V

    Symbol Rate: 27.5

    FEC: 2/3

Hope this helps you get your channels back!

  152. Tony B asked – on 12th Nov. – when his Amstard box EPG might be upgrade. I have an Amstrad HD box and have today received notification that my EPG will be upgraded “in a few days”.

    Harvey

  153. Thanks Harvey – I have received the same notification so maybe it might just happen – fingers crossed.

  154. I have just had the upgrade & have tried this & it works fantastic thanks BOB ;)

  155. May I ask how long it was from getting the advance notification to getting the actual upgrade? I presume that what happens is that one morning you just find that it has been upgraded overnight?
    Harvey

  156. Have just discovered that my EPG was upgraded overnight. That’s 4 days since receiving notification. No complaints there.

    Harvey

  157. ITV HD does not work for me — been like this for days now.

Message: ”This programme is unavailable on ITV1 HD”

  158. I had SkyHD installed Friday 4th December with old EPG but woke up this morning (7th December) with new EPG.

I have added ITVHD using the above instructions, I am now waiting for ITVHD to broadcast something in HD so I can check it out!

  159. Hi Jamie — that caption is correct. I’ve just checked, and they’ve changed the wording of the display that they put up when there are no HD programmes being transmitted. It used to say that the service “is unavailable” — I’ve amended the main story above to reflect this change. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

You must be patient: check the ITV1 programme listings in something like Radio Times and look in the small print at the bottom of each programme to see which ITV1 programmes are also being shown on ITV HD. If you select the ITV HD channel then, you’ll see the programme in HD.

Ace, Harvey, Lee — thanks for keeping us all up to speed with your own experiences. Glad it’s OK for you!

    :)

  160. Hi,

I have Amstrad Sky HD Box with the new EPG Nov 30th 09, I have the channel that ITV1 HD sits on, and it’s blocked saying “no sat signal”, trust me I have no signal problems at all.

No problems with the BOX, it’s been switched off at the socket rebooted again and again. I would warn that I’m sure Sky will be doing the same when an OS update will happen to older boxes.

  161. Stu — you’re not the first to report this “no signal” problem, but others have found that if they tune to the ITV HD channel when they’re actually broadcasting an HD programme, it then works. Check back through the above comments, around November 23rd.

  162. Re-set worked on my Sky box, I can get ITV HD now. Thanks a lot Bob

  163. WOW

    Thanks for your help…

It really works. At hte moment the screen says This programme is unavailable on ITV1 HD. I’m just waiting for one to come along..

    Thanks buddy!!

  164. My Amstrad box has been upgraded at last with the new EPG and I’ve tried on several occasions both when ITV1 HD is broadcasting and when it’s not. I’ve re-booted many times and I still get the no satellite signal is being received message. I must suspect that this is being blocked by Sky. What are others experiencing?

  165. Hi, after reading the reviews and like so many others having the “No Satelite Signal” – just checked the listing Ah – footballs on ITV HD – it actually works, here’s what I did, I deleted the 10510 channel from the “Other Channels” tab, went into “Add Channels” changed the setting’s and did the scan found 10510 and added it – hey presto got Arsenal in HD….great :)

  166. Tony B and Stu — I don’t think it’s the case that Sky is blocking it, as many who get it no problem are still getting it, while others who first experience the ‘no satellite’ problem seem to have success at a later stage — maybe doing it Mark’s way (see above comment) is what you should try (assuming you haven’t already): remove 10510, and go through the add channel process again while there’s a programme actually being transmitted on ITV HD. I’ve no idea why this should make a difference, but … it seems to work in some cases!

  167. Just added itv HD it works fine thanks for the information
provided on this site !!!!!!!!!!! :)

  168. John R — You’re welcome!

    :)

  169. Hi all I too have an amstrad box my epg was updated mon 7th December 2009, tried to add ITV HD the day after had the no signal sign, but just removed the channel then tried it again while it was broadcasting the football, and its now working Thanks everyone!!

  170. Met — thanks for your comment. It seems from the comments coming in that the Amstrad boxes in particular are the ones exhibiting the ‘no satellite signal’ problem and need to be tuned into IYV HD while the channel is actually broadcasting a programme. Interesting! I’ve added an update to the main item above to draw readers’ attention to the ‘Amstrad problem’ and its possible resolution.

    :)

  171. Hooray – I too have removed 10510 and re-added it and yes it does work and I’m now watching ITV1 HD. Interestingly, I added it during an episode of Emmerdale which is broadcast in HD but doesn’t seem to be listed anywhere. I can’t stand Emmerdale but that my be interesting for those who do like it.

  172. To all you guys with Amstrad boxes: when you first try and connect to ITV HD you will get a caption saying NO SATELLITE SIGNAL. All you have to do is remove or delete 10510 channel and go through the same steps and re-tune 10510 and you will then receive ITV HD.

  173. Just in case this helps anyone else, I have an Amstrad box and had the same problem as others had experienced with the “No Satellite Signal is being received” message appearing, despite having followed the instructions to the letter.

I had tried rebooting and also re-performing the procedure whilst ITV was broadcasting a HD program, both to no avail.

I have got it working tonight by going into “Other Channels” and removing ALL of the other channels that were in this, I’m not too sure how these other channels got in here in the first place, but there were some other entries in there like “WELL CLASS” so I removed all of these using the yellow button.

I then re-performed the scan as before, and this time when I added 10510 I was able to see the ITV HD banner, so this was not even when a HD program was being broadcast.

Hope this may help others who might be experiencing the same.

  174. Andy, you are right and this is definitely the way to fix the Amstrad problem — suggest Somerset Bob posts this fix on his update — pity there ain’t much to watch on ITV1 HD — never mind, it was fun trying!

  175. Tony B, Andy, Dan C — thanks guys! Great sleuthing on your parts. I’ve updated the update on the main story to reflect what you’ve discovered.

    :)

  176. Hi Bob,

Just followed your instructions and its working perfectly only wish i had discovered it sooner i thought ITVHD was only available on Freesat.

    Cheers

  177. Thanks Bob for a great site helping people with HD problems. Also I’ve just heard you will soon be able to get the BBC iPlayer through your HD box and also they are now starting to film football matches in 3D which I can’t wait to see. It will be like you’rr on the pitch playing. Happy Xmas and new year to you all and enjoy ITV HD what little they show.

  178. Paul — Glad to hear it’s worked for you! Enjoy your HD viewing.

Andy — Thanks so much! Happy Christmas to you too – and to all the contributors to this topic of mine. It’s been by far the most successful post I’ve ever made — it probably accounts for about 95% of the traffic to my site!

I hope you all have a peaceful, High Definition Christmas — and here’s to much more HD programming in 2010!

    :)

  179. Bob,

Just wanted to drop a quick line and say thankyou for your clear and informative information about how to tune my skybox into ITV HD. I found the instructions clear, easy to understand and they worked perfectly first time.

    Thankyou!

    Happy New Year.

    Richard.

  180. Richard — my pleasure! Thanks for taking the time to let me know it worked well for you.

A Happy New Year to you too!

    :)

  181. Hi Bob. My SkyHD box was showing “no satellite signal” for itv HD. Detuned it and then retuned it as you suggested and hey presto! Keira Knightley in HD!!

  182. Just a tip for all you guys who are still waiting to recieve the new EPG. What I did was pestered the technical dept at Sky telling them all my neighbours had the new EPG ages ago when they didn’t and threatened to cancel and go elsewhere. And guess what, within 7 days I had the new EPG. TRY IT

  183. Thanks Bob — followed your updated info on ITV HD – works great!

I have the Amstrad box. I had to remove all the other channels it found except for the 10510 … before it would store the ITV HD channel.

    Great info thanks!

  184. Hi Craig — glad it worked out for you. Thanks for dropping by with your comment! Happy New Year viewing!

    :)

  185. Cheers Bob, Great stuff & happy new year mate!

  186. Chris — thanks for your comment, and a Happy New Year to you too!

    :)

Can anyone help pls???

  188. I have just sat down to watch the Reading v Liverpool game and 10 minutes into the match it froze and went to a blue screen i called my mate and he had the same happen any idea? was the signal blocked in some way?

    PH

  189. HI guys,

i have continued to try and finally got it working. CHeers Bob for puting the info on.

  190. HI guys,

new problem, there seems to be a delay on my picture as if it was streaming. it glitches for a second then cathes up. anyone had this problem before?? can anyone help me to fix it.

    Cheers ASh

  191. Pete Combes says:

Thanks for this, looks really good. someone is selling this on ebay for 99p, cheeky git !

  192. hi
Successfully got the 10510 channel stored but everytime there is a ITV HD programme on (checked with listings) all I get is ‘No satellite signal is being received). I have removed and restored the channel but without success. Can you help?

  193. Steve Redmond says:

    Hi Bob
Just tried the update on ITV HD, using Pace Sky+HD
this works watching Liverpool & Reading but the picture is freezing every 3 seconds for 1 second then jumps plays catchup, anyone else had this problem,

    HNY

  194. Hi Bob,

I have followed all the steps to install ITV HD and seen how good the picture is.

However, I was trying to watch the footy in HD today and the icture kept freezing and then went completely! My brother had exactly the same problem.

    Any suggestions please?

    Many thanks

  195. Whoa!

Ashley, Pete, John, Steve, Nick (and anyone else who had problems last night) — I tuned in to watch the footy and after about ten minutes had the same freeze-frame problem as you. Went to ‘normal’ ITV1 and the pic was OK. Went back to 10510 several times over the next 20 minutes or so, but got only a blue screen. I decided it had to be an ITV transmission fault and stayed with ‘normal’ ITV1.

Searching this morning with Google, we weren’t the only ones to encounter problems last night — try this DigitalSpy thread for comments from more disgruntled viewers!

  196. Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply… hopefully ITV will get it right for todays games !!!

  197. hi again
I tried to watch the footy again (leeds v Man u) and got only a blue screen again!!
I have not been able to watch a single ITV programme in HD yet!
Please can you help?? Is it my set up which is getting ‘no satellite signal being received?’
    Thank you

  198. Had Sky out 2 days ago and they replaced my exisitng Sky HD box due to a fault. Im now unable to add ITV HD using the correct config. – Frequency (GHz): 11.427
    Polarisation: H
    Symbol Rate (Mbaud): 27.5
    FEC: 2/3

Just get “No Channels Found” when trying to add it in.

I see people have had issues last night, anyone getting ITV HD via Sky @ the moment??

    Cheers

    Rick

  199. Just an update – Got it working, reason why it did not add was due to a recording in progress, shame there was no error message detailing this!

2nd Half of Man Utd V Leeds in HD –

    Cheers

  200. im trying to watch leeds man u now. ive removed and readded a couple of times and still i get no satellite signal is being recievied on channel 10510.

std itv sigal is terrible on a decent tv.

  201. Stevie H says:

Top marks great instructions and got ITVhd

    Nice one

  202. Absolute quality, cheers Bob!

  203. I can get ITV HD fine on my Amstrad box, but have lost ITV1. Just comes up no signal? Tried removing the 10510 channel and resetting etc, but no change?

  204. John, Rick, Shofty, Stevie H, Steve, Duncan — thanks for your comments, guys.

Getting ITV HD to work on your Sky+ box seems to be a very hit-and-miss affair. Sometimes the channel itself experiences problems (as per the Liverpool game), and sometimes it appears that some of the boxes can ‘hold on’ to a previous problem (even though the channel may be transmitting normally) until the box is re-booted — see some of the comments on page 5 of this Digital Spy discussion topic. Clearly, there’s a lot of trial and error going on amongst Sky+ users — and neither Sky nor ITV are likely to offer any help, since they don’t want us watching it via Sky anyway!

So we’re on our own, folks, we have to try and help each other out — and on that subject: does anyone have any suggestions for Duncan, who’s lost ITV1?

  205. Ray Stern says:

Bob – I am an OAP (72) and thanks to you set up ITV HD on my Sky HD Box. However this past weekend I am getting sound only. Can you please help me ? I only watch sport on TV as I am housebound and wanted to watch the football in HD

Happy New Year to you and yours

    Can you please e-mail me

  206. Ray — will do. I’ll e-mail you later today.

    :)

  207. Bob
Can you help me, my problem same as others I have read above, my ITV HD picture froze, then went away, leaving a blank blue screen, got some sound, but not 100% sure that it was via 10510, have tried rebooting via my Sky box, but still get blue screen, no picture – could you help please

    Peter

  208. Hi Peter — I’m afraid I’m as much in the dark about this problem as you and many others. I’ve just checked what I’m receiving, and I’m getting the ITV HD caption, so I’m receiving the picture I’d expect to see at 4:20 in the afternoon when there are no HD programmes being transmitted by ITV1.

I don’t know what to suggest. Perhaps other contributors to this item will come up with something, so watch this space!

  209. Hi All – I also was watching the footy at the weekend using a Bush freesat HD box and the picture froze every few seconds.
Went back to normal OK. Tried HD again, froze again. Gave up ITVHD for the match. Will have another go next time some thing worth watching.

  210. Hi all — I have a friend who works for ITV technical dept. There was a technical fault with ITV with the Liverpool match. ITV HD is fine — watched the drama last night no problem. Peter I had the same problem and what I did was went back through the steps, removed all the Freesat channels and 10510, and then rescanned them all back. And hey presto — ITV HD now working fine. Try this.

  211. Hi All
Is there any point in buying an expensive HDMI lead for my HD box and if so, what should I look out for ?

  212. Hi Paul — it is worth the cost of getting an HDMI lead. The picture is even better, and when playing DVDs a massive difference. Also the sound quality improves big time. That’s what I have found.

  213. Hi Andy- Many thanks. I have the HDMI lead that came with the unit and the picture and sound seem very good. But I see advertised on ebay and on the high street leads form £9.99-£99.00 ! Should I look out for anything special?

  214. I bought the £99.00 lead. I know it’s a right rip off and expensive, but as you know you only get what you pay for. Sound and picture: great quality. But will also upscale your DVD movies to better quality.

  215. Aren’t HDMI leads the ones with the copy-control signal? I don’t like my video devices dictating what I can and can’t timeshift or format-shift.

  216. Well, to be honest there’s no point spending huge amounts on expensive HDMI leads — the signal is digital so it’s either OK or not. Obviously a £1.99 set from a bloke on a market stall may well be of poor construction, bad connections may break down. I think the main thing is to look to see if it is 1080p compatible — is it xyz compatable apparently gives better colour rendition. I had a pack of 2 gold plated medion 2 meter cables from Aldis for £6 — can’t be bad, but no difference to the standard one from Sky tbh — but hey, whatever makes you feel good ehh

    ;)

So if you have money to burn by all means buy the best of the best, but don’t be suprised when your mate gets the same picture as you with a £5 or £10 set of leads — or in my case a pack of 2 for £6.

  217. CAN ANYONE HELP? I have a black line down the screen of my LCD TV — it only happens now and again. What’s the best thing to do?

  218. guystuckey58 says:

    Thanks Bob
Worked first time wish I’d heard about you when Liverpool were actually on Itv HD

  219. Thanks for the tips Bob it works a treat and first time of trying too . You’re a star Bob.

  220. Richard Knowles says:

Any news on the frequency to be able to see the Sky 3D trials ??

  221. Richard — no news yet, at least as far as I know. I’m looking forward to it, though!

    :)

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll need a “3D-ready” TV to view it!

  222. Thanks for the guidance Bob – getting itv 1 hd a treat now!

    Neil..

  223. Hi Bob,

Just tried this and it works a treat!

Thanks for the info, makes a change from watching crap football coverage on itv.

    Regards,

    Alan.

  224. Xochimilco says:

Thanks Bob … is great not to buy an expensive freesat hd box.

  225. Quality thread, actually works thanks very much

  226. im trying to add the hd version but its coming back no channels found putting the steps that you said

    can you help

  227. Hi all..

Can someone please ask If the following can be done?

I’m looking to invest in a sky freesat box! If I’m assuming this can broadcast the like of BBC HD and CH4 HD..

Can you add ITV HD on a normal sky standard box or does it have to be a SKY HD Box? Since I’ve only seen instructions to add ITV HD on a sky HD box…

    Any Help much appreciated..

  228. Cheers Bob works a treat passed it round all my pals in the pub who said “u cant get it without freesat” !! lol The things we get excited about !! lol

  229. snodger says:

thanks for itv hd thingy. worked brilliantly.sick of watching footie in standard.thanks muchly!!

  230. hay this is great…..i take it i have to remove the channel after as i can not move off this channel once installed. just says schedual info not avail…..??

  231. Cheers Bob just added to my new sky hd box, currently watching England v Egypt. Great Picture shame about the score.

  232. Thanks to you all for your recent comments!

Lorna — no, no need to uninstall it, just change to the next channel of your choice by using the number buttons on your remote as you would normally do.

Next time you want to view ITV HD (when they actually broadcast something in HD – at all other times you’ll see a caption on the screen saying “This programme is unavailable in HD”), go to the TV Guide, get into the top menu and sroll to Options, then drop down and select Other Channels, then drop down into the apparently empty box, select 10510, and press Select.

  233. I’ve been having trouble for MONTHS now with some of my HD channels — including BBC HD, E4HD, FXHD and a small number of others — that will not work when the input being used on the box is input 1. If something’s already being recorded on input 1 and the box has to use input 2 to view or record one of these affected channels, it works OK — but if they’re coming in on input 1, the signal loses its ‘lock’ and the strength drops to zero; I get either a pixellated, freezing picture or, more often, ‘no satellite signal is being received’. As soon as I switch back to a standard channel (or an unaffected HD channel such as Channel 4 HD or Sky 1 HD)), the signal ‘lock’ restores immediately, signal strength returns to normal and it works fine again.

This has been driving me mental for ages. I’ve swapped the cables round on the back of the box to see if the problem’s at the dish, but it’s still input 1 that has a problem, so it seems to be a fault in the box. What I don’t understand is why only SOME of the HD channels don’t work on input 1, while most others DO!

I’m loathe to call Sky because if it’s a SOFTWARE issue that might be addressed in an upgrade at some point soon, I don’t want my box exchanged for someone else’s refurbished box that might still exhibit the same problem because it’s in the software.

Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? In fact, does anyone have exactly the same problem?

It’s a Thomson, Model No 902020, Version No 4E3004, OS Version 1.32B12, EPG Software Wersion sky+8.3.2

    Thanks.

  234. Sorry to go off topic, but is there a way to still use my Sky HD box as a PVR now that I have cancelled my subscription with them?

    Cheers for any help :)

  235. Hi Justin — no worries, I went a bit off-topic myself just above you!

Have you tried looking for advice in the Sky User forum?

    http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/

It’s an unofficial site, but seems well organised and populated. I’ve asked about my problem there now, and the first quick reply I got suggests it’s a problem with the Power Supply Unit (PSU) on my ageing Thomson box.

  236. Ah thanks so much I’ll try there :) Yes your box sounds like it has the common fault with these boxes, I actually had a very similar problem with mine and that’s what sky told me was wrong with it.
This was all within the first month of my new set up being installed and un beknown to me at the time I was sent a replacement which turned out to be a reconditioned box and this again went faulty, including a very loud whiring sound if left on standby for a few hours, not sure if this was the hard drive?
Only when I threatened to cancel my subscription many more months down the line did they replace my box with a brand new one.

Anyway I have now cancelled due to not getting enough time to justify the monthly cost, but now seems I may be stuck with a fairly useless HD box in terms of a PVR :( Seems a shame to bin it and having to buy another type of box just for recording :(

  237. Bob,

Thanks for the advice, worked a treat and now watching ITV HD Football!
Was livid that after paying out extra I would have to buy a further box to watch HD on the “free” channel ITV.
    Thanks again!

  238. gary speight says:

cheers bob,ive been succesful following your instructions.your right theres not a lot worth watching but they have all the fa cup rights at the moment and after you have watched football in hd normal tv is crap.good to have you around

  239. Thanks Bob I have just tuned my sky HD box and it worked fine for ITV HD. Are there any other channels available out there that sky are not telling us about? Thanks again

  240. Thanks a million Bob, finally got it working again after removing the channels and trying again whilst ITV HD was broadcasting….they are other guides on the internet but none mention the problem with the Amstrad box and having to delete and re-input the HD channels in add channels.
    Thanks again.

  241. i followed the instructions but my stored channel is called RBS or sumin?? any ideas?

  242. my frequency won’t change from 11.778. anything I can do? I have a new Sky HD box

  243. Ryan — sorry, no idea!

Pete — that’s odd. Again, no idea! After dropping down to highlight the Frequency, you should just be able to use your remote to put in the numbers 1,1,4,2,7 and then press “Select”, then drop down again to highlight Polarisation and press the right scroll key to change it to “H”, then press the yellow button to “Find Channels”.

  244. Bob, Thanks, I managed to get the frequency in and it all works :) thanks

  245. Hi,

Thanks for your help so i can now get ITV HD. The only thing is when I go into options, it ask me for a pin number each time. How can I stop this?

    Yours Alan

  246. Alan — I don’t know. Never had that reported before!

  249. Hi Bob,
Same problem as Ryan above on 10th March. The channel has tuned into frequency 11.427 but simply shows a blue screen and channel listed as RBS. Can Anybody else help?

  250. krissy bhoy says:

  251. Excellent instructions watching Arsenal getting hammered by Barca

    Thanks

  252. well guys we dont have to mess about trying to get ITV HD on sky anymore. It will be on sky from tomorrow on channel 178. thanks for all your help Bob

  253. Andy — Well, it’s about time! Thanks for letting us know.

Pity though – this post has been by far the most successful item I’ve ever published, and each time there’s been a football match on ITV HD my site’s hit-count has soared from the average of about 100 a day to well over 500! I’ll miss those hits …

Glad I’ve been able to help so many people!

    :)
