Somerset Life Episodes

By Somerset Bob

Microphone with HeadphonesWhen I began podcasting in 2005 (the show lasted for 43 weekly episodes before it ground to an end in May 2006 – see the Podcast post), I invented Sam & Ebeneezer, two ‘Zummerzet vaarmers’ who starred in a little vignette I called Somerset Life. It was originally intended to be a one-off item, but I enjoyed doing the voices and putting the little production together and for a while it became a regular feature. Unfortunately, I was pretty awful at finding the inspiration to write consistently funny scripts week after week (a wry admission from someone who now aspires to be a writer!), so after five weeks I dropped it because production of the rest of the podcast was suffering – having no ideas for the script, I’d fret and faff and not get anything else done until the last moment.

A few months after I’d dropped them, listener (and fellow audio producer and voice-over man) Philip Banks came to my rescue and penned a few further episodes for me.

The first batch of five Somerset Life episodes were written by me; Philip’s episodes are the second batch, the ‘special editions’. Left-click each title to download and play it in whichever media on your computer is configured to play MP3s, or right-click and select “Save target as …” to save to your hard drive. If you’re only interested in playing and not saving them, click “Stream it!” for each entry and your media player (e.g. Windows Media Player, Winamp, Real Player) will open and begin playing the file immediately while downloading the rest of it.

  1. Interesting stuff here. Very nice voice. I am in a couple of bands, Mr. Egg and Gravity Plan, and you featured us quite a while back on your “Kingley’s Corner” podcast. As a onetime stalwart garageband.com user, I had not made it round there very often for a while. I love the concept, and there is some great music there, but it seems mostly musicians are there. So it’s off to myspace and others for the old music thing. So, why am I prattling on?

I’m not sure if we responded to your kind note that you were featuring us on your show. Thanks to the “miracle of the transistor… er, internet, ” podcasts and twinkies can last a long time, so we were able to download it and check it out. Still trying to get the twinkie down. So, thanks for having us on. Sorry to see it not around. Do anything of that nature these days?

Congrats on your blog. Good luck with everything. New stuff on myspace to check out if you wish. Cheers from San Francisco.

  2. Thanks for your kind comment, Ken. Your bands are Music To My Ears.

  3. A glimpse into the Summerset dialect of Southwest England

This site gave my Somerset Life episodes a positive review! Thank you!
